A daily drawdown indicator for MT5 shows, on the chart, how much of today’s loss limit you have used and how much room is left, measured from the start-of-day figure. MetaTrader 5 does not show this on its own, so you either work it out by hand or let an indicator do it.
Most traders keep an eye on the Profit column and assume they know where they stand. The Profit column, though, only shows open trades. It says nothing about what closed trades have already cost today, and nothing about how close you are to the line. This article explains what a daily drawdown indicator adds and how to check its figures yourself.
The Trade tab of the Toolbox shows balance, equity, margin, free margin and the open profit or loss of each position. The History tab lets you add up closed results for a period. Each figure is accurate, but none of them is the one you need during a hard day: the room left before your daily limit.
To get that, MT5 would need to remember the start-of-day figure and know your limit. It does neither, so the arithmetic falls to you or to a tool.
For an equity-based rule there are three steps:
It is often easier to turn the limit into a single equity level: start-of-day figure − limit. If equity reaches that level, the day is over.
Example only, to show the method: start-of-day balance 25,000, daily limit 1,000. The line sits at equity 24,000. With equity at 24,380, today’s drawdown is 620 and the room left is 380 dollars, or 1.52% of the start figure.
For a balance-based rule, replace equity with balance: only closed trades move the figure. The two methods are compared in balance vs equity daily drawdown.
A daily drawdown indicator does that sum on every price change and puts the result on the chart. A useful one shows:
The value is not in the arithmetic, which is simple, but in seeing it at the moment you are about to open another trade. A number on the chart is harder to ignore than a number you meant to work out.
We publish a free information-only indicator, the Spectar Daily Loss Planner, on the MQL5 Market. It shows your daily loss limit as an equity level and the room left in money and percentage, and it never opens, changes or closes orders.
In MetaTrader 5 an indicator cannot trade. It can draw and calculate, but it cannot close a position. That is a feature if you want information only, and a limit if you want the day to stop by itself.
Some traders run both: the indicator for the view, the EA as the backstop. If you want the backstop, our guide on how to set a daily loss limit on MT5 walks through it.
An indicator is only as right as its settings. Before you trust it, check three things against your own rules: the reset hour (server time, not local), the measure (equity or balance), and the base the percentage is taken from (account size or start-of-day figure). Then compare its start-of-day figure with your account history for the same moment. If they agree, the rest follows. Our article on what time the daily drawdown resets helps with the first point.
No. In MetaTrader 5 indicators cannot place, change or close orders. If you want positions closed at your limit, you need an Expert Advisor.
It shows figures only while the terminal is open. It should read the start-of-day figure correctly when you open the terminal later, but check that it matches your account history.
No. Firms differ on the reset hour, on equity or balance, and on the base for the percentage. Set the indicator to match your own rules.
In Spectar FX Gold the Monitor window shows your position, your daily result and the limits you have set.
Spectar FX Gold is a subscription service for MetaTrader 5, for gold (XAUUSD). You set every number yourself — lot sizes, daily stop, daily target, trading hours and news window — and the rules work within those settings; we set no number for you and recommend none. When the daily stop is reached, the position is closed and nothing new is opened until the next day, which starts when the market opens in your broker’s server time.
It runs on your own MetaTrader 5 account. We never receive your broker password, never hold funds, and there are no signals. A gap in the market or slippage at your broker can carry a position past any limit; a daily stop is a setting, not a promise. The plans are MANUAL, SEMIAUTO and AUTO, monthly or yearly, with an 8-day free trial on MANUAL monthly. You can read more in the FAQ.
Keep your daily limit in one place: the free Daily Loss Limiter for MT5 locks the trading day once today's loss reaches the figure you set, and the daily loss calculator shows the balance where that happens.
