MetaTrader 5 has no built-in setting that stops trading after a set loss in one day, so the usual way is an Expert Advisor (EA) that watches the account and closes positions when the figure is reached. Decide three things first — the amount, when your trading day resets and whether open losses count — then enter them in the EA’s inputs.
A daily loss limit only helps if it acts when you are least likely to act yourself: after a run of losing trades, with the next one already in mind. This guide walks through setting one up on MetaTrader 5 from the beginning. It does not tell you what your limit should be. That figure comes from your own rules or your firm’s.
MetaTrader 5 lets you place a stop loss on each position, but it has no account-wide switch that says “stop trading for today once I have lost this much”. A stop loss protects one trade. A daily loss limit protects the whole day, across every position and every symbol. To get that behaviour inside the terminal you need a small program running on a chart: an Expert Advisor that checks your account on every price change and acts when the limit is reached.
Some brokers and firms track a daily limit on their own servers and close or flag the account when it is crossed. That is their check, not yours. An EA on your side lets you stop before their line, at a figure you choose.
Write the limit down in money before you open the terminal. On a funded or challenge account, start from the daily loss rule in your firm’s official terms. Many traders then set their own figure a little inside it, so that a spread or a slow fill near the line does not push them over.
Example only, to show the method: if a rule allowed 500 dollars of loss in a day and you wanted a margin of your own, you might enter 450. The numbers are illustrations, not suggestions.
Most EAs accept the limit as an amount, as a percentage of a base figure, or both. If you enter both, check which one the EA uses; a careful tool applies the stricter of the two.
“Today” is not your local calendar day. Most rule sets count the trading day from midnight broker server time, which is the time shown in Market Watch, and that is often two or three hours away from where you live. If your EA resets at a different hour from your firm, the two of you are measuring different days. Our article on what time the daily drawdown resets shows how to find the server time on your own terminal.
There are two common ways to count it:
Some rules also take the start-of-day figure as the higher of balance and equity at the reset. Match your EA to the wording of your own rules. The difference is explained in balance vs equity daily drawdown.
The steps are the same for most EAs delivered as an .ex5 file:
MQL5\Experts.If you install from the MQL5 Market instead, the file lands in the right folder for you; steps 4 to 6 stay the same.
Before you rely on it, attach the EA to a demo account with a small figure and let it reach the limit on purpose. Check three things: that it closes every open position, that it deletes pending orders if you asked it to, and that a new trade opened after the lock is closed straight away. Then check that the lock lifts at the reset hour you set. Ten minutes on a demo tells you more than any description.
It is worth being clear about the limits of the method:
No. MetaTrader 5 has a stop loss for each position but no account-wide daily limit. You add one with an Expert Advisor that watches the account and closes positions when the figure you set is reached.
It cannot disable the trade buttons, because MetaTrader 5 does not allow that. A limiter closes any new position as soon as it sees it while the day is locked, so a manual trade can still cost spread and commission.
That is your decision. Many traders set their own figure inside the firm’s rule to leave room for spread and slippage, but we do not suggest a number. Read your firm’s official wording first.
Spectar FX Gold has its own daily stop, which you set in the panel like every other number.
Spectar FX Gold is a subscription service for MetaTrader 5, for gold (XAUUSD). You set every number yourself — lot sizes, daily stop, daily target, trading hours and news window — and the rules work within those settings; we set no number for you and recommend none. When the daily stop is reached, the position is closed and nothing new is opened until the next day, which starts when the market opens in your broker’s server time.
It runs on your own MetaTrader 5 account. We never receive your broker password, never hold funds, and there are no signals. A gap in the market or slippage at your broker can carry a position past any limit; a daily stop is a setting, not a promise. The plans are MANUAL, SEMIAUTO and AUTO, monthly or yearly, with an 8-day free trial on MANUAL monthly. You can read more in the FAQ.
Keep your daily limit in one place: the free Daily Loss Limiter for MT5 locks the trading day once today's loss reaches the figure you set, and the daily loss calculator shows the balance where that happens.
