Trading gold on a prop-firm account with an MT5 tool: what to check first

Published 3 October 2026 · about 6 minutes to read

Running a tool on a funded or challenge account is not the same as running it on your own retail account. The firm’s rules sit on top of everything you set. This is a practical list of what to check before the first trade on gold (XAUUSD) — whichever tool you use.

1. Does your firm allow automated or assisted trading?

Firms differ a lot here. Some allow expert advisors and external tools without conditions, some allow them only if the strategy is your own, and some forbid particular styles: high-frequency trading, latency arbitrage, tick scalping, or copying trades between accounts of different people. Read the section on prohibited strategies before you start, and if anything is unclear, ask the firm in writing and keep the answer. Compliance with the firm’s rules is your responsibility — no tool can take that over.

2. Daily loss and maximum loss

Almost every prop-firm style rule set has two loss limits: one per day and one for the life of the account. Before you enter a single number into any tool, write down:

Your own limits in a tool are only useful if they are expressed in the same terms as the firm’s. Remember that a gap or slippage can carry a position past any limit you set.

3. News, trading hours and weekends

Gold reacts strongly to US data: payrolls, inflation, central bank decisions. Some firms restrict opening or closing trades in a window around high-impact news; others allow it on some account types only. Many also restrict holding positions over the weekend. Find out:

If your tool lets you set trading hours and a news blackout, set them to match what your firm allows. In Spectar FX Gold both are settings you enter yourself.

4. Symbol name and contract size

The gold symbol is not called the same thing everywhere. You may see XAUUSD, GOLD, or a suffix such as XAUUSD.r or XAUUSDm. A tool has to use the name exactly as your own Market Watch shows it, otherwise it trades nothing or the wrong instrument.

Check the contract size as well. On most MT5 accounts one lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces, so a $1 move is about $100 per lot, but not every server uses that size. Open the symbol specification in MetaTrader 5 and look before you choose any lot size.

5. Technical setup

Where Spectar FX Gold fits

Spectar FX Gold is a subscription tool for XAUUSD on MetaTrader 5. It is not a prop firm: there is no challenge, no evaluation, no funding and no payout. It runs on your own MT5 account — retail, challenge or funded, with any broker or firm — and it works with prop-firm rules in the sense that every limit is yours to set:

Whether a tool fits your firm’s rules is something only you can check against the firm’s own wording. Our Terms of Service (section 8) say so plainly: you are responsible for complying with your firm’s rules and for choosing numbers that keep within them.
